All 4 | The streaming service from Channel 4

All4

As one of the top free to air channels in the UK, Channel 4 has provided the UK with a huge number of popular programmes throughout the years, with sitcoms, world drama, documentaries and reality TV taking the country by storm.

The likes of Big Brother, Made in Chelsea and The Inbetweeners have all had massive viewing figures across the years – and Channel 4, E4 and More4 are continuing to create programmes that delight and endear viewers.

Channel 4’s online site to stream, All 4, is a free online service that’s available at home or on the go. We’re going to run through how to watch and what to watch on the Channel 4 app.

What’s in this Guide?

What is All 4?

All4 launched a paid subscription service to support ad-free viewing

Launched by the Channel 4 Television Corporation back in November 2006, the service was initially named 4OD (4 on Demand) and didn’t require any registration – you could simply access the website and watch completely for free.

As a precursor of sorts to the streaming giants of today, Netflix and Amazon Prime, 4OD allowed fans to watch their favourite shows whenever they wanted for the first time.

By 2011, the online TV service from Channel 4 had reached around 215 million views on its web version of all its channels, making it the biggest commercial UK broadcaster in terms of on-demand services during that time.

The platform was re-branded as All4 in March 2015 and now offers freeview play and a paid subscription service, All4+, if you want to watch your favourite TV shows on demand and completely ad free. You can also download shows and box sets to watch offline to save your internet or mobile data – so you can’t go wrong.

How to watch All 4?

4 is home to sitcom giants such as Peep Show

Unlike streaming services such as Netflix and Disney Plus, All4 is a free TV player for the general public to watch anytime. This means there’s no need to submit too many personal details and you can watch all of Channel 4’s range of shows and movies you want at no charge – including all your Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 favourites.

Access to All4 is available through the Channel 4 website or the All4 app through your smart TV, through Sky or Virgin Media, or on any compatible device such as Apple and the Android operating system.

The sign up process is incredibly simple, requiring just your email address, password, name, date of birth and post code and you can get watching on your TV, computer or tablet in no time!

How about All 4+?

All4 + launched in late 2018 on a small-scale but the service was quickly rolled out across the board. You can now see it visibly (but not intrusively) advertised at the top of the All4 website, offering new customers the chance to trial the service for 14 days before choosing whether to purchase or not.

Once your free trial ends, the service costs just £3.99 per month for unlimited viewing, almost completely free of adverts! Similar to ITV Hub+, the option to stream your favourite TV programmes ad-free is a big draw for viewers.

Compatible devices

The All4 app is available on multiple platforms, live and on demand, from pretty much any device you like! With the app available on PlayStation, Xbox, Apple and Android devices, you’re stuck for choice with options. Watch from your desktop, laptop or download it to your games consoles and you can get watching.

Reality TV shows

Made In Chelsea has been running for 10 years and can be downloaded on All4

Perhaps one of the biggest draws of Channel 4 is the wide range of popular reality TV available, with the likes of Made in Chelsea, Gogglebox and SAS: Who Dares Wins all available for live streaming.

Sitcoms and other comedy shows

Watch the Big Bang Theory without adverts on All4+

4 have a long-running reputation for providing some of the best sitcoms from both the UK and across the pond to their viewers, with cult classics The IT Crowd, The Inbetweeners, Peep Show and The Big Bang Theory all drawing massive audiences.

Catch more recent shows, too, such as Derry Girls and Friday Night Dinner all on the streaming platform.

Links with Canadian TV network Adult Swim means that you can catch up on all the best adult animated comedy from the famous production line, which has helped create the likes of Robot Chicken, which is available to stream on All4.

Documentaries

All4 is the place to be to catch up on often boundary-pushing and ultra-relevant documentaries. The latest you need to check out are Elon Musk: Superhero or Supervillain and The Truth About Nike and Adidas: Dispatches.

The 4 television corporation put a lot of money into the production of such documentaries and explore the questions everyone wants the answers to – and often the ones people never even think of.

Channel 4 staples

The Great British Bake Off has been a hit since it moved to Channel 4 in 2017

There are some long-running shows on Channel 4 that you just can’t beat. Long-running soap opera Hollyoaks has been shown on 4 since *, and you can catch up on a huge back catalogue of the programme.

Other shows such as Taskmaster and First Dates have become popular staples of the network’s offering – making them a certain TV guide highlight.

And who can forget The Great British Bake Off, which moved from the BBC to Channel 4 back in 2017. Many die-hard fans didn’t think the new line-up (and new TV production) would quite work out, but the show is as big a hit as it’s ever been with hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas taking it to new heights.

Box sets

Watch American box sets like Buffy the Vampire Slayer with All4

The freeview play service from Channel 4 struck a deal with the Walt Disney Company in 2020 to allow it to stream famous box sets from 20th Century Fox, adding shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Vampire Diaries to its online service.

Walter Presents

All4 has become home to an exclusive platform, too, with Walter Presents becoming a huge hit on the streaming service. This separate video on demand service specialises in foreign language drama and comedy, and is named Walter Presents after Walter Iuzzino, who selects the content for the platform.

The latest version of Walter Presents has been made available in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, after already proving a hit in the likes of Italy, the USA and Australia.

Live TV

Of course, as with other streaming platforms from freeview play TV channels in the UK, All 4’s services include showing all of the network’s channels live online.

Once again, you will have to sign in to your account to be able to watch Live TV, but you have free access to Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4 and more.
